Modernism

The Harlem Renaissance talks about how African Americans have more rights in Europe than in the United States. During World War One there were a lot of black soldiers who went to Europe and saw that blacks had more rights and more freedom in Europe than in the United States. When the soldiers came back to America they became creative, they became poets, and Jazz and the Blues also came into place. African Americans became more freely in America when they came back from Europe.

2. Read the story that coresponds to the topic you chose. Chose a topic according to your interests, not the length of the story. Choosing a story because of its length is not the wisest way to approach this assignment. Disillusionment Soldier's Home by Earnest Hemmingway The Harlem Renaissance Sweat or The Gilded Six-Bits by Zora Neale Hurston can be found here. The Jazz Age Choose a story by F. Scott Fitzgerald here. Phychoanalysis The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber

When you are through reading, you should type a two-paragraph response to the story you read, and then provide another two paragraphs in which you analyize the topic you chose and how it is represented in the story. You need to be sure to provide quotes from the story to support what you claim.

Delia Jones is a washwoman who washes people clothes for a living. Her husband Skyes, whose she married to for 15 years is an abusive and lowdown man.Delia has bad health and her husband likes to scare her a lot.For 15 years she's had to put forth effect to save her marriage. Her husband don't care anything about her, the only thing he cares about is the money. At the same time he hates the fact that Delia washes white folks clothes.Ah done promised Gawd and a couple of other men, Ah aint gointer have it in mah house. He promised God that he wouldn't have anything to do with white people in his house and outside of his house. The reason how this story relates to Modernism, back in those days whites and blacks couldn't get along.People may think that whites and blacks could get along, they really couldn't.Sometimes whites and blacks could get along, but most of the time they couldn't.Don't think because white people would pay Delia to wash their clothes, that they liked her.

Richard Corey is a poem about a gettleman who was rich and everybody thought that, because he was rich that he was happy. Instead of people getting to know him they judged him and he was not this happy person that everyone thought. He was a depressed person who needed help, but instead of getting help he committed suicide. Whatever he was going through, he was trying to get away from it rather than getting help. In fine, we thought that he was everything, the people judge Richard Corey because he was rich and they thought he had it all. And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,Went home and put a bullet through his head. What they thought they saw in Corey was not him at all. Just because he was rich and had everything he wanted, money did not make him happy. He was sad and depressed.Modernism is proven to everyone what you saw, may not be what you get. Do not judge something by what you see on the outside, go by what you see inside.

Mending Wall is about two neigbours and a wall. One neigbour wonders why the wall is up and the other one thinks that Good fences make good neighbours. Every spring is the only timethat they get together and fix the wall. Over the course of the year nature and winter are the cause of the wall breaking, as well as hunters and their game. The writer doesn't think that the wall should be up because both neighbours had trees and trees can't cross over onto a neighbours lawn. Modernism is based on proving that the American Dream isn't real like everyone thinks it is. The writer thinks it's stupid because the neighbour wants the wall up because his father told him that Good fences make good neighbours.

A Dream Deferred is saying that every dream someone has does not always come true. Just no matter how much you may want a dream to come true, doesn't mean that it will. Or does it explode This quote is saying that you dream over and over about what you want to happen, but in reality, your dream is just a dream. Some dreams do come true, but other are more like people wishes. Does it stink like rotten meat This quote is asking, when someone dream, is that just or dream or can it actual happened. Not all dreams are real, but who knows, maybe they can come true. The American Dream was suppose to be this big dream, but instead of a dream it was just a wish.

The Negro Speaks of Rivers the poem talks about his ancestors in a possitive way than negative. He is talking about how his ancestors were the first people, how his ancestors I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.made house to sleep in. He is showing the readers that for awhile Africans has made history all over.My soul has grown deep like the rivers. In this quots he is saying that his people have had to suffer since ancient times.Once Africans were kings, queens, and paraohs.Things started to change because they became slaves themselves. Modernism was not always about a dream not coming true or being negative, because there was still good in Modernism.Jazz, The Blues, African American Poets, all these things began to come into place. People started to change their thoughts on the way things were going.

Incident this poem talks about how he thought going to Baltimore would be better than where he was.Up North they were not as racist like they were in the south.Once riding in old Baltimore, Heart-filled, head-filled with glee.Once he got there he saw that it was the same like it was in the south,And so I smiled, but he poked out His tongue, and called me, Nigger. A white boy no bigger than the writer called him a nigger because of what he was taught. The writer saw that it did not matter where you went, there was still racists people every where.Just because it is worse in one place, does not mean it not better in another place.

Realism

1. Read "A Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin. You should be able to indentify the following in this story:

a. details that specifically explain a characters actions, or detailed descriptions of a setting
b. a social issue that Chopin wants to solve

Write a paragraph respone to a and b in which you explain how this story includes these aspects of realism. Each paragraph should have some direct evidence from "A Story of an Hour".
"When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease-- of joy that kills". The women was happy because she thought her husband was dead. Back in those days women had no rights like they do now. Due to the fact she was happy about her husband death, it came back to haught her in the end.

She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. Before when her husband was dead, she couldn't see the outside life. Now he's dead she can see anything she wants without him on her case about it.

2. Read "The Battle with Mr Covey" by Frederick Douglass. Follow the same directions for #1. Go further on this one to explain what you think Douglass' purpose was for writing this. Your response should be three paragraphs.
The main character in the story was a sixteen-year-old slave who was being mistreated by his master, Mr. Covey. The slave gets tired of his master whipping him so he goes to Master Thomas for protection from Mr. Covey. Master Thomas didn't help the slave, the slave had to learn how to fight Master Covey own his own.

It was for a long time a matter of surprise to me why Mr. Covey did not immediately have me taken by the constable to the whipping- post, and there regularly whipped for the crime of raising my hand against a white man in defence of myself. And the only explanation I can now think of does not entirely satisfy me; but such as it is, I will give it. Mr. Covey enjoyed the most unbounded reputation for being a first- rate overseer and Negro- breaker. It was of considerable importance to him. That reputation was at stake; and had he sent me- - a boy of sixteen years old- - to the whipping- post, his reputation would have been lost; so, to save his reputation, he suffered me to go unpunished.
Mr.Covey had a reputation of being the best master of keeping his slaves in check, but if had of took his slave to the sheriff office everybody would think that he was weak, that he couldn't handle his slaves. That's why he didn't take him to the office.

To show other people how slavery really was back in those days.Who ever reads this to know that slavery was wrong and that it should have never started. He felt that by writing about the horrible conditions that slaves had to work in would be enough to get people to start thinking about having slavery abolished.

3. Provide a modern example of realism (Boyz in tha Hood, and Menace II Society, for that matter are off-limits). This can be music, a movie, a television show, a book, or whatever you may choose. You need to explain how it is realism, and provide an example from your choice (a lyric, description of a scene, quote, etc.)
[Verse 1] I'm supposed to be the soldier who never blows his composure Even though I hold the weight of the whole world on my shoulders I am never supposed to show it, my crew ain't supposed to know it Even if it means goin' toe to toe with a Benzino it don't matter I'd never drag them in battles that I can handle unless I absolutely have to I'm supposed to set an example I need to be the leader, my crew looks for me to guide 'em If some shit ever just pop off, I'm supposed to be beside 'em That Ja shit I tried to squash it, it was too late to stop it There's a certain line you just don't cross and he crossed it I heard him say Hailie's name on a song and I just lost it It was crazy, this shit be way beyond some Jay-z and Nas shit And even though the battle was won, I feel like we lost it I spent too much energy on it, honestly I'm exhausted And I'm so caught in it I almost feel I'm the one who caused it This ain't what I'm in hip-hop for, it's not why I got in it That was never my object for someone to get killed Why would I wanna destroy something I help build It wasn't my intentions, my intentions was good I went through my whole career without ever mentionin' Suge Now it's just out of respect for not runnin' my mouth And talkin' about something that I knew nothing about Plus Dre told me stay out, this just wasn't my beef So I did, I just fell back, watched and gritted my teeth While he's all over t.v. down talkin' a man who literally saved my life Like fuck it i understand this is business And this shit just isn't none of my business But still knowin' this shit could pop off at any minute cuz [Chorus] [Verse 2] There used to be a time when you could just say a rhyme And wouldn't have to worry about one of your people dyin' But now it's elevated cuz once you put someone's kids in it The shit gets escalated, it ain't just words no more is it? It's a different ball game, callin' names and you ain't just rappin' We actually tried to stop the 50 and Ja beef from happenin' Me and Dre had sat with him, kicked it and had a chat with him And asked him not to start it he wasn't gonna go after him Until Ja started yappin' in magazines how we stabbed him Fuck it 50 smash 'em, mash 'em and let him have it Meanwhile my attention is pullin' in other directions Some receptionist at The Source who answers phones at his desk Has an erection for me and thinks that I'll be his ressurection Tries to blow the dust off his mic and make a new record But now he's fucked the game up cuz one of the ways I came up Was through that publication the same one that made me famous Now the owner of it has got a grudge against me for nothin' Well fuck it, that motherfucker can get it too, fuck him then But I'm so busy being pissed off I don't stop to think That we just inherited 50's beef with Murder Inc. And he's inherited mine which is fine ain't like either of us mind We still have soldiers that's on the front line That's willing to die for us as soon as we give the orders Never to extort us, strictly to show they support us We'll maybe shout 'em out in a rap or up in a chorus To show them we love 'em back and let 'em know how important it is To have Runyan Avenue, soldiers up in our corners Their loyalty to us is worth more than any award is But I ain't tryna have none of my people hurt and murdered It ain't worth it, I can't think of a perfecter way to word it Then to just say that I love ya'll too much to see the verdict I'll walk away from it all before I let it go any further But don't get it twisted, it's not a plea that I'm coppin' I'm just willin' to be the bigger man If ya'll can quit poppin' off at your jaws with the knockin' Cuz frankly I'm sick of talkin' I'm not gonna let someone elses coffin rest on my conscience cuz
This song talks about life and how you shouldn't cross anyone because there will be consequences behind it. No matter what you do to get back at somebody, never put anyone kids involved. With me, my kids see or be involved with some mess that they shouldn't, I'm going to make surre that person pays. My kids are my life and no one is going to take them away from me with out death being involved.

Dark Romanticism

1. Review each of the authors I have described above. Provide an explaination why each one of them would be against the Transcendental philosophy.
Nathaniel Hawthorne's great grandfather was one of the judges who hung people and two dogs because they were thought to be witches.Hawthorne was embarrassed by this and thought that everyone had the choice to be evil.Transcendentalist believed that everyone was pure and God spoke to them through their minds, but Dark Romanticism believed that everyone had a choice to be good or evil.Hawthorne had an example in his family. His great grandfather killed people.

Herman Melville wasn't educated because back then school was basically for the rich.Heman Melvillie grew up poor.Instead Melville got to see things that most people never probably heard of.He saw whales and cannibals.Soon he wrote a book called Moby Dick. The book is about a captian who sacrified his crew to kill a white whale who ate off his leg.In the story Moby Dick Captain Ahab was so obsessed with getting revenge on the whale that he he killied his crew.If he was a Transcendentalist Captian Ahab would go by himself to kill the whale and not a crew.Transcendentalist believed in going out and being by yourself.

Edgar Allen Poe had a bad life his he was very young. His mother died and his stepfather disowned him.Everytime he married someone she died from tuberculosis, his life wasn't all that great. What he went through was the caused of him drinking and doing drugs. He also had a bad example why everyone was evil and not pure. The people who he love the most either died or turned away from him.Transcendentalists believed that death was apart of nature and when you die, you'll become nature.Poe didn't see that,he saw death as the worse thing.Transcendentalist saw death as a good thing.

2. Which side of the divide do you fall? Are you closer to being a Transcendentalist or a Dark Romantic? Explain your answer with a short paragraph.
Me personally I'm a Dark Romanticism, because I don't believe that everyone is pure.God doesn't speak to you through your mind,if anything He'll show you that He's talking by taking away the ones you love the most or having the one you love betray you.No one in this world is completely good, every single person is born with sin.If people were so pure and good then there would be no killings,no drugs,no gangs,no prisons,no jails,no homosexuals, none of that.Transcendentalists wanted to believe that everybody was pure, they tried so hard to believe that everyone is good, but reality is everybody are sinners. The Transcendentalists were sinners,Dark Romanticism were sinners,I'm a sinner and you're a sinner.Everybody is a sinner no matter what.

3. Read either "The Black Cat" or "Hop-Frog", both by Edgar Allen Poe. As you read, keep the Dark Romantics' beliefs in mind because you will be asked to point out these beliefs in the story later.

4. Write a 2-3 paragraph response to the story you read. You should explain what you thought of the story as well as how well it illustrates how the Dark Romantics disagreed with the Transcendantalists. You need to provide at least a line or two of direct textual evidence from the story you chose to prove your claim.

My personal thought on the story Hop Frog. The story shows Edger Allen Poe's feeling towards people and life. The story talks about a king and his seven men who treated Hop Frog and his girlfriend Tripetta like animals.Out of anger and revenge, Hop Frog comes up with this joke at a masquerade to get back at the king and his men.The result of this joke turns into a death one, because Hop Frog sets them on fire.Edger Allen Poe sees life as hell.At the age of two his mother dies from tb and his three wives, because of that,he sees the world as hell. Before his mother died he saw life as this beautiful place, almost like Heaven. That changed when his mother left him physically.

At length the flames, suddenly increasing in virulence, forced the jesterto climb higher up the chain, to be out of their reach; and, as he madethis movement, the crowd again sank, for a brief instant, into silence. The dwarf seized his opportunity, and once more spoke:

Hop Frog set the king and his seven men on fire, because the king was cruel and he hit Trippette who's Hop Frog's girlfriend.Hop Frog wanted to get back at him for being mean and cruel.Dark Romantics didn't think that everything was all pure and good. They saw that the world was evil and people were evil.

5. Once of Poe's most famous works was "The Raven", a poem he wrote while his second wife was literally dying in the next room. Read the poem (more than once), and then write a response that includes a few lines that stuck out to you. The second paragraph of this respone should explain how this poem represents an anti-Transcendental idea.

"And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtainThrilled me--filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before; So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating"'Tis some visiter entreating entrance at my chamber door--Some late visiter entreating entrance at my chamber door; This it is and nothing more." How the writer was scared when he heard the knock at the door, Transcendentalist believed that nothing was scary that everything was all good. the poem to me was very powerful, because the writer told how he felt about life and death. Poe's sadness and sorrow went with him to his grave. Like the Raven told the writer that his friends will leave him, but the raven will stay with him all the time. The Raven was right, Poe's darkness stayed with him.

6. Do some additional research on Edgar Allen Poe's life. Once you have finished, provide some information about his life that I have not already posted myself. After doing so, explain how you feel the events of his life had an influence on the things he wrote. Give specific examples from both his life and his works.

Edgar Allen Poe was on January 19,1809 in Boston. He was born to the late actress and actor,Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe Jr.David Poe Jr was from Baltimore,Maryland.Like most children,Edgar Allen Poe had a good life and money something that most kids didn't have. All that happiness that Poe had changed after his mother died of TB in 1811.Poe was only two years old when his mother died. After his mother's death,Edgar Allen Poe went to live with John Allen (that's how Egdar Poe got his last name as well) and his wife, they were very wealthy. They never legally adopted Poe,when they died Poe wouldn't get their fortune.John Allen and Edgar Allen Poe did have that son and father relationship. As an adult Poe went off to college, but came back because he had a gambling problem. When Poe return to Richardmond,Virginia he found that his girlfriend had gotten engaged to another man. That's why some of Poe's poetry talks about his lost love. After he lost his first love,he had left Virginia to go to Boston where he published a pamplet with his poetry.Although he didn't make any money off his poems,he entered into the army under a false name (Edgar A. Perry). He attended the West Point Academy for a while until he got kicked out.One of the most unique thing about Poe,that he married his thirteen year old cousin. The marriage lasted for eleven years, his wife (cousin) died from the TB in 1847, like Poe's mother.

When you are finished, review your work to be sure it contains everything I've asked for, and then leave me a comment to this post to remind me to read your work.

My Life Story
Ashley Willis

Sometimes the people, who tell you they love you, really don’t love you. I thought that my stepfather loved me, but I found out that he didn’t. When I was about four years old my brother Chad bought a guy with him when he came to see my mom and me. The guy’s name was Sam Haygood. I thought that Sam was a nice guy. He played with me, he spend me around in circles. I liked him a lot. When I turned five years old he came to move in with my mom and me. I was excited to have someone who would be like a father to me. At first everything was okay, we had fun everynight. We would go to the movies, go to the mall, and we would travel on the holidays. It was a good life until I turned seven. At seven things started to turn down hill. My stepfather became abuse towards me. He started doing drugs, and drinking everyday and everyrnight.
There was a night that I could never forget even if I wanted to. It was a rainy and stormy night, and my mother was at work working late. It was just me and my stepfather at the house. I was upstairs sleeping in my bed waiting for my mom to come home. There was a bang outside that woke me up. Same came upstairs to see if I was okay. I replied "NO"; I’m scared, I want my mother. He took me by the hand and he hug me and said, "everything will be okay". I believed him. I got back in bed and went back to sleep. Sam stayed in my room to make sure that nothing would happen to me. He got in the bed with me, and he pulled me towards him. He whispered in my ear that this night would change my life forever. I was scared, I didn’t know what he was talking about.
He started hitting me, and beating me, then he started ripping my clothes off. It was cold, I was afraid that he would kill me. He started touching me, and then he started fingering me. I was crying for my mom asking where she is. All he did was told me to shut up, and take the pain that I’m about to give you. As he was rapping me the phone rang. He got up to answer it; it was my mom calling me to see how we were. He told her that everything was fine, knowing that everything wasn’t fine. He told me that if I told anyone that he would kill me. She came home that night, I was crying she ask what was wrong, I said nothing I fell down on the floor. She ask if I was okay, I wanted to say no, but I didn’t want to die if I had of told her what happened while she was gone.
That next day I had turned eight and I remember that I was angry with my stepfather. For that whole day I was mad and upset, I didn’t want to do nothing but cry. Later on that day my stepfather took me to the mall while he was driving he told me that he was sorry and that he’ll never do what he did to me again. I wanted to believe him, but something in my heart told not to.
The more I wanted to tell my mom I couldn’t. I ask one of my pastors when someone puts their hands on you and you were scared and didn’t know what was happening what does that mean? He told me that if someone puts their hands on you without your permission that means it’s called rape.
I asked him what if someone that is close to you, that’s your stepfather, and he does the touching and fingering, what does that mean? He said that no one is suppose to put their hands on you unless you say they can, and if you’re a child and anyone puts their hands on you, it called child molestation, or rape. I said okay, thank you for your time. As I was leaving h ask me if anything like that happened to me, I said no I just saw it on t.v. That’s why I asked. I got a clearer understanding about what was going on, but I was still scare for my life.
For that whole year while I was eight nothing happened, everything was fine. When I turned nine things started back going down hill; he started rapping, molesting, and beating me. Threating to kill me and my family if I ever told anyone what was going on. The more he started beating and doing whatever to me, the more anger I grew and hatred came into my heart. Everyday me and him would fight over something stupid, we would argue over anything, and we would threaten each other. On June 12, 1998 I became a member of the crypts. My brother was the leader of the crypts at that time since he was the leader. I didn’t have to do that much, accept get the beating. I was used to get beatings I took it and I got in. He asked me what was my point of being a member when I see what he go through each and everyday. I told him that there was something’s going on that, and that I needed to be tougher than I was. On my eleventh birthday my brother and the gang took me out to eat and we all hung out together. Not knowing that day would be the last my brother lives. It was around 12:00 o clock and I was at home sleeping, all of a sudden the phone rang. It was the Dr. Johnson; he told my mom that my brother had just been shot.
We rushed to the hospital to see him, when we got there the gang was already there with their heads down, tears coming from theirs eyes. I didn’t want to hear what the doctor even had to say, accept that Craig will live. My brother was close to me, he knew lots about me accept the abuse. A few months later my grand died of cancer, I felt like there was nothing for me to live for now. That’s when I told my mom about the man she loved was beating, molesting, and rapping me. When I told her that she didn’t believe me, she had my therapist send me to a mental institution. I stayed in laurel wood for about two weeks. Since I waited so long to tell DFCS couldn’t do anything.
While I was in the mental hospital I felt safe, and I knew that he couldn’t hurt me any longer. I kept telling people that I was homicidal, suicidal, and depressed. I kept getting put back in the hospital. The first two times I went in and came out, my stepfather beat, beat, and beat me. Them were the two worse beatens I got from him. When I turned twelve I started skipping school, doing drugs, and threating people. I became more devilish than ever. I loved having the hate for people in my heart. I felt like the world was against me. Especially the one person who I thought would believe of all would be there, but she turned her back on me to.
I wanted everyone to suffer what I had to suffer, I decided to make everyone’s life a living hell. I hurt people, I betrayed my family and friends, and I even help planned a murder, but it didn’t work the way I wanted it to. On my thirteenth birthday I was in and out of the hospital for that whole year. Missing school and fighting people. I had stopped writing poetry about love, and I started writing poetry about hate, stepfather, rape, and everything that was evil to me. In my head there was nothing good about the world, or the people in it. I hoped that there would be an ending to this pain, but I see it will never be.
At the age of fourteen on March 3, 2003 I found out that I was pregnant. I knew who the father was the minute I found out. Everyone kept asking who was the father; I kept lying saying I don’t know. Until finally I got tired of lying and I told them who the father was. I remember the cops coming out to talk to me; DFCS came to talk to me, and the deceptive. My mom was in court for something that happened back in December. She was upset that this was coming back up again after two years of it keeping closed. That night I stayed in the hospital scared, pissed off, hurt, betrayed, and other things. She went home apologizing to Sam asking him to forgive me for the truth that I was telling and the things he was lying about. I didn’t want anything to do with him or her at the time. Even now I still don’t want anything to do with my mom, but I can’t make it if I don’t have her. I’m still making her pay for the pain I’m going through. On March 30, 2003 I was planning on having an abortion, I went in the doctor’s office ready for this to get over with. I was ready to kill the ones that had nothing to do with this, blaming them for something that wasn’t even their fault. When I went into the room, the doctor put this jelly stuff on me, then he look to see how far a long I was. The minute I heard my children heart beat I knew I couldn’t kill them. It wasn’t their fault how they were conceived; all that matter was that they would come out off me in nine months with no conditions and they were healthy.
I told the doctor and my lawyer that I would have them instead of aborting them. Everyone was happy to hear that I was keeping them, but some of my family was disappointed because they didn’t want me to have them. I called the ones that didn’t want to have them and I told them that this isn’t your decision that it was mines, live with it, or get the hell on. We talked about it for about two days and they accepted it. Now they love my kids to death and happy that I did keep them.
Until July 7, 2003 I stayed in the mental hospital to keep my anger undercontrol and my depression. On July 8th of 3003 I went to Athens Regional and I stayed there for a week I kept having contractions so they kept me to make sure I was okay. Then I went back on July 20, 2003 and stayed there until I had my kids which was on September 20, 2003. I went in labor at about 11:45pm on September 19, 2003. At seven 7:50 am and 8:00 am on September 20, 2003 I had my kids.
I left the hospital on the 30th of September along with my kids. We had to go to court on November the 12, 2003 for my mom to get custody back of me. We also got the DNA results to prove that I was telling the truth the whole time. The test came back positive and my mom got custody back of me. Now we still have a lot to do, but things are better than what they were before.

Transcendentalism

When you are through reading, post a 1-2 paragraph response to your blog. Be sure to consentrate more on what you thought of each piece of writing. Try to include at least one piece of direct evidence with each response. This should be something that stuck out to you about the particular piece of writing.

Nature
I thought that the writer of this story,Ralph Waldo Emerson told the truth about how some people take nature for granted. In one part of the story he talked about a woodcutter and a poet."It is this which distinguishes the stick of timber of the woodcutter, from the tree of the poet".That's saying,a woodcutter is only looking at trees for money, but a poet will see a tree and can tell a tree from other tree. The poet will listen to the sounds around him,as far as a woodcutter,he will only look at a tree as a living by making money off of it.

Self-Reliance
This story talks more about God speaking through a person's mind."There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance;that imitation is suicide".This means that;when you try to copy somebody or be somebody your not, your only killing yourself. You're not trying to be who you are instead you want to be something or somebody you're not. Before you try to act like somebody think about it first, because the person you act like might not be the person who you really want to be.

Resistance To Civil Government
In this story, there is a man whose is Thoreau and he's goes to jail for night all because he didn't want to pay taxes. At this time there was slavery and a war with the State and Mexico, everybody's taxes were going to help the war so that slavery could still be.Thoreau was against slavery and helping the war.The police arrested him for refusing to pay his taxes."I have paid no poll tax for six years.I was put into a jail once on this account, for one night".Why arrest Thoreau now instead of waiting six years? When you strongly believe in something, don't let no one come between your choice.Make your own decisions and don't let anyone tell you other wise.

Next, write explain how each piece is a good example of Transcendentalism. Use what you read above, and prove that each piece is a good example with a paragraph supported with direct evidence (one paragraph each).

Nature

"To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber [room] as from society".Transcendentalism believed in taking time to yourself.Going far and deep into the woods as possible, where it's just you and the trees.Even though your by yourself, but then you're not because you have the dead that turned back into the trees, the streams, and the ground. When you think that you're alone, really stop and think, you're really not. There are more dead people under the ground than there are people that's living on the ground. When you're deep in the woods you can hear your thoughts and listen to the sounds of nature, but you can also hear God speaking to you through your thoughts. If you ever want to hear God speak to you,go away from society as far as possible and just listen to what your mind is really telling you,I promise that thought in your head will be God speaking to you.

Self-Reliance

"These voices which we hear in solitude, but they grow faint and inaudible as we enter into the world.Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members".When you're alone all by yourself,it's easier to listen and think for yourself, but when you're with society it's harder for a person to think for his/her self.Everyone will try to think for you and tell you how to be.Society wants to make choices for each other, but themself, when you're alone you can think for you and be who you want to be without somebody telling you, that you're wrong for being you.

Resistance To Civil Government

"It is not a man's duty,as a matter of course,to devote himself to the eradication of any, even the most enormous wrong;he may still properly have other concerns to engage him;but it is his duty,at least,to wash his hands of it,and,if he gives it no thought longer, not to give it practically his support".When you make a choice make sure it's a choice you made, and not the help of the government, even if it's a major choice. If you feel strongly about the way something is going and you stand up to it,keep standing, don't let nothing break you.Fight for your belief, don't let others fight for you."I devote myself to other pursuits and contemplations,I must first see,at least, that I do not pursue them sitting upon another man's shoulders".Stay true to yourself and don't let others talk you into doing something that you feel is wrong, even if it's going against your government.Transcentalist wouldn't care what the result were of a bad decision, they were going to do what they thought was right.

. Susan and David planned to marry as soon as they graduated high school. David's father owns a small grocery store, and he has promised David a full-time managerial position once he graduates high school. During their senior year, Susan begins to think she would like to go to school hundreds of miles away. In the Spring, Susan recieves a full scholarship to this far-off school, and she has also continued making wedding plans with David.

. Chris, a college senior, has just been accepted to the best law school in the country. His parents, Sheila, his wife, and his brothers and sisters are very excited for Chris since he has wanted to become a lawyer for his entire life. Chris isn't so excited though. He has realized that he would rather be a high school teacher than be a lawyer. Chris would have to go back to school to get his teaching certificate.
Chirs' wife is not exactly thrilled with this idea since she has been looking forward to the salary Chris would make as a lawyer. With Chris' new plan, she would have to pay for Chris' additional schooling.

Choose one of the scenarios and explain how you would do in this situation, and then explain how a Transcendentalist would feel about it. You should provide direct evidence from one of the texts you have read to support what you say a Transcendentalist would feel.

I would have to say the second one, because it's his choice. If going to school for teaching would make Chris happy then he should do it.His wife is just mad because she only wants the money,if he goes to school for teaching he wouldn't make as much money as he would if he was a lawyer.Chris should do what Chris wants to do,don't let his wife choose for him.If she can't accept her husband decision, then she's not the one for him.If that were me,I would do what makes me happy, not worry about if my wife will accept it or not.I wouldn't let nobody tell me what I should and should not do,especially if there only after my money.Transcendentalist they would be mader than mad about this. They believed that you should listen to your own thoughts and make your own choice."If you would be a man, speak what you think today in words as hard as cannon balls, and tomorrow speak what tomorrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict every thing you said today".Even though Chris wanted to be a lawyer one day,but change his mind later on,he should do what he wants to do.Even if it means leaving his wife.

I Have a Dream

"I Have A Dream"
By: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In 1963 one of America’s most powerful figures wrote a speech named "I Have A Dream". In this powerful speech, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. talks about the future with black and white coming together to make a whole. That was one of his most important dreams to see everyone come together as one. Everything about the speech "I Have A Dream" is exciting and very unique. Dr. King gave this speech in Washington D.C. on August 28, 1963 in front of 250,000 people. I feel he gave the speech to show everyone that no matter what color you are, and no matter what background you come from, you are who you are and nothing can change. Most importantly it’s the inside of you that counts the most.

When he gave the speech, it was more powerful than anything before because Dr. King finally accomplished his dream. "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men were created equal." Even though whites and blacks still argue and disagree, there is much less hatred for one another. We have learned how to come together; not all of us have learned that, but most of us have. Another reason why this speech is unique is that there hasn’t been anyone else to come up with a speech like that and give it in front of thousands and thousands of people.

After a while some white people started to see that the way life was going back then was crazy and insane. They wanted what Dr. King wanted, a world a peace. Not all white people felt like that; some didn’t want black and white together at all, but some just wanted to be free of hatred and racism. "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character". Martin Luther King Jr. did accomplish his dream even though he wasn’t alive to see it happen, but it did. I’m not saying that there’s no racism, but whites and blacks have come a long way in life because of Dr. King.

"Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last". In my opinion this means that slavery has ended and soon we as different races and as different skin will come together as a whole. We will join hands, and finally be able to love who we want, be friends with who we want and be free to walk into a restaurant and not have to go to the back. Yes! Yes we are free last, just like Martin Luther King Jr. said
