2. Write a 4-5 paragraph response to the Puritan texts. Explain your thoughts about how these people lived. Better responses will have some direct textual evidence to support what you say.
Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God .
In both of the readings I was having a little trouble understanding what it was saying. I was able to figure out somethings like, in the first reading the person was showing alot of anger and telling people that they were going to burn in hell. Because of Adam and Eve's sins God was mad at the whole world.
Of Plymouth Plantation
In the second reading it was telling people that God was mad at the world to, but in a more calmer way. They were more understanding about the way God works. They knew He was a forgiving God, but they would also have to forgive others. They also were trying to live God's way of life, by making peace with the Indians and trying to do what's right.
Treaty with the Indians (1621)
This was saying how they met the Indians and had their first harvest together as one. When the Pilgrims first met the Indians they thought the Indians couldn't speak English, but one Indian who came from London, England spoke English well, that surprised the Pilgrims. The Indian's name was Samoset and the other Indian's name was Sguanto, Sguanto could speak better English that Samoset.
Perseverance of the "saints" - those elected by God have full power to interpret the will of God, and to live uprightly. If anyone rejects grace after feeling its power in his life, he will be going against the will of God - something impossible in Puritanism.
Being thus arrived in a good harbor, and brought safe to land, they fell upon their knees and blessed the God of Heaven who had brought them over the fast and furious ocean, and delivered them from all the perils and miseries thereof, again to set their feet on the firm and stable earth, their proper element. And no marvel if they were thus joyful, seeing wise Seneca was so affected with sailing a few miles on the coast of his own Italy, as he affirmed, that he had rather remain twenty years on his way by land than pass by sea to any place in a short time, so tedious and dreadful was the same unto him.
Explain how it match
They Praised God and thanked Him for His blessing. They were following the rules of God's way. They could have the upright power and Glory. To them following God's way was the only way to get forgiveness and give respect to god for all He has done for them.
Total Depravity - through Adam and Eve's fall, every person is born sinful - concept of Original Sin.
The wrath of God burns against them, their damnation does not slumber; the pit is prepared, the fire is made ready, the furnace is now hot, ready to receive them; the flames do now rage and glow...
Because of Adam and Eve every person was born with sin, and because of that it also means that we can burn in hell. Every person born after Adam and Eve was not born to be perfect, they were burn to make a chioce between Heaven and hell.
Irresistible Grace - God's grace is freely given, it cannot be earned or denied. Grace is defined as the saving and transfiguring power of God.
What could now sustain them but the Spirit of God and His grace? May not and ought not the children of these fathers rightly say: "Our fathers were Englishmen which came over this great ocean, and were ready to perish in this wilderness; but they cried unto the Lord, and He heard their voice and looked on their adversity," etc. "Let them therefore praise the Lord, because He is good: and his mercies endure forever. Yea, let them which have been redeemed of the Lord, show how He hath delivered them from the hand of the oppressor. When they wandered in the desert wilderness out of the way, and found no city to dwell in, both hungry and thirsty, their soul was overwhelmed in them." "Let them confess before the Lord His lovingkindness and His wonderful works before the sons of men."
Explain how it match
Show God and thank Him for his loveingkindness and His hard work. Don't take it upon yourself to thank yourself, because without God you wouldn't be able to do the things that you do now. Let Him know that you're thankful for everything that He has given you and more.
